Introduction

Operations management plans and coordinates all activities in the process of producing and delivering the products (goods and services). Matching supply with demand is one of the most critical steps toward effective and sustainable operations management for firms. In this course we will discuss fundamental concepts, models and techniques that firms can apply to better organize their operations so that they more effectively align their supply with the demand for their products and services. This course will cover a mix of qualitative and quantitative problems and issues confronting operations managers. We will discuss business processes analysis, inventory management, scheduling, project management and the impact of variability on business processes. The final part of the course focuses on how to improve business processes and examines classic ideas in quality management. Throughout the course we illustrate mathematical analysis applied to real operational challenges – we seek rigor and relevance. Our aim is to provide both tactical knowledge and high-level insights needed by business managers. We will demonstrate that companies can use (and have used) the principles from the course to significantly enhance their competitiveness and performance.
