A delegation of economic officials from the British Embassy in China visited EMS
Date:2020-10-05

On the afternoon of September29, 2020, Lottie Murphy, First Secretary of Economic Affairs of the British Embassy in China, Martin Walley, Deputy Consul General of the British Consulate-General in Wuhan, and Liu Wei, Senior Economic Officer of the British Embassy in China visited our school. Liu Cheng, assistant to the Dean, met with the guests in the conference room of the College. Also present at the meeting were Zou Wei, Professor of Mathematical Finance and Mathematical Economics, Liu Yan, Special Associate Researcher of The Department of Finance, Hu Sijia, Deputy Director of The European and African Office of the International Exchange Department, and Luo Yu, Secretary of foreign Affairs of the Office of External Liaison.

The purpose of the delegation's visit is to learn about the economic recovery of Hubei province after the epidemic, to investigate the views of scholars on the economic recovery of Hubei Province, and to explore the possibility of further research and cooperation between the British Embassy in China and scholars. On behalf of the College, Assistant Dean Liu Cheng extended a warm welcome to the delegation of economic officials from the British Embassy in China. He introduced the basic information of the school from the aspects of its history, disciplines and specialties, academic research and faculty, and hoped that further practical cooperation could be carried out through exchanges. During the meeting, Lottie Murphy, first Secretary for Economic Affairs at the British Embassy in Beijing, asked questions about the British government's concerns. Professor Zou Wei said the economic recovery and development in Hubei province after the epidemic should put "people" first. Make full use of the advantages of "human resources", especially the large number of highly skilled human resources cultivated by local universities. The government provides assistance and financial support to college students to meet the needs of high-end manufacturing talents and build a "strong manufacturing province". Facing the 14th five plan, we should make arrangements in advance. A large number of medical research institutes, key laboratories and hospitals in Hubei province conducted interdisciplinary and trans-regional cooperation with the team of experts who assisted Hubei during the epidemic. In the next 5 to 10 years, efforts should be made to build a healthy and innovative industrial base. Afterwards, Liu Yan, the specially invited associate researcher, briefly introduced the cooperation between his research team and the University of Leeds in the UK. He hoped that more British enterprises would come to Hubei for investment and investigation after the epidemic, so as to promote the cooperation with Hubei auto industry and manufacturing industry. On the other hand, due to the impact of the epidemic, the number of students applying to study in the UK has increased significantly this year. We hope to take this opportunity to establish cooperation with the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in China and vigorously develop educational exchanges and cooperation between our college and British universities. This meeting will broaden the possibilities for further exchanges and cooperation between our college and the British Embassy in China.

It is reported that since the outbreak of COVID-19, the economics and management scholars of Wuhan University have provided advice to governments at all levels to fight the coVID-19 epidemic, and contributed wisdom to various enterprises and institutions to help them out of difficulties. Teachers' profound patriotism and social responsibility have also attracted worldwide attention. The visit of the delegation of economic affairs officials from the British Embassy in China will further promote the influence of the college in the international community and lay a good foundation for the exchanges and cooperation between the College and the British government as well as universities.
